A multicenter, double-blinded, registry-based randomized controlled trial

The Probiotics in Extreme Prematurity in Scandinavia (PEPS) Trial is an ongoing study in Sweden,  Denmark, and Germany. The study enrolls extremely premature infants born before 28 weeks' gestational age and investigates whether probiotic supplementation reduces the risk of developing necrotizing enterocolitis (also called NEC) and neonatal mortality. Other important short- and long-term health outcomes will also be investigated over the duration of the study.
